Greg's Grill - Bend Oregon
Greg's Grill
Could there be a bigger restaurant than Greg's Grill in Bend? Who are the ad wizards that came up with this one? I'm a big guy but I feel like Gimli walking through the Great Hall of Minas Tirith when we are escorted to our table. It's that big. These photos are from our first visit to Greg's Grill and we have been there once more since. On our first trip we tried the lettuce wraps. I know that it looks like we have already dug in here but that's how they serve em. In two of the lettuce cups you have rice and the lima bean salad. I actually can't remember if that was BBQ Pork or Chicken but it had mushrooms in it. Eh. Not a huge fan of fungi in my food.
How lame is it that I can't remember what it was yet I'm writing about it? Pretty lame, don't listen to me. I liked the wraps, I remember that. They weren't as good as at PF Changs by any means but they were pretty good.
I also had a cup of chowder. After a bite I asked the waiter (who looks like a young Hugh Grant ... not that I am in the Hugh Grant fan club or anything .... damn it) if it was low fat. He assured me that it was, he said that there actually are zero calories. So there you go, eat all you like.
The chowder was so thick and creamy, I could feel the fat on my thunder thighs multiplying with each delicious spoonful.
While we looked over the menu we almost got two dishes that were NOT off the grill. Then we realized that we couldn't do that. Not on our first visit. I mean why go to Greg's GRILL if you don't get something off the grill? Reminded me of when Jerry ordered "just a salad" at a steakhouse.
So the wife go the chops with potato pancakes and I got the NY strip and the baked sweet potato.
That's a lot of food. For the money I think Greg's Grill is a great deal. Greg's Grill - Great Deal ... print it. I could go without the obligatory vegetable ensemble but I get why they add it. While the wife liked her potato pancakes, she couldn't keep her damn fork out of my brown sugar butter that was quickly melting away into the sweet potato canoe. Maaan, that shit is like crack! Sorry for the cursing but it really is that good. I started getting the junky itch ten minutes after all the crack butter was gone...and I'm pretty sure the wife had cut some lines while I wasn't looking.
Our meat was prepared perfectly. My steak was rather good and the wife's chops were as well. All in all the meal was pretty good. For the money the portions are huge and I think it's worth it. I'd probably skip the appetizer menu the next time and save a few bucks since your main dish will be plenty.

11What? Got something to say?
Is that (hack, gag) ICEBERG LETTUCE for the lettuce wraps?! How cheesy is that? I mean, c'mon, use some kind of actual flavorful, healthful lettuce at least, right? Iceberg is just water held together by some kind of fiber. And I hope Hugh Grant was grinning when he said the chowder had no calories. He was, wasn't he?
Um, aren't lettuce wraps ALWAYS made with iceberg lettuce?
Anyway, maybe the mistake I made in my two visits to Greg's Grill was NOT ordering a grill item. Everything was just sort of 'eh'---not bad, not great. I do love a good steak so maybe next time I'm in the mood, we'll try it...
Yeah good point Chill. Normally they are made from Iceberg since they are crisp and firm and form natural cups.
I have had spinich wraps which are really good but will fall apart easily. Anonymous people smell funny.
Dang. You took my line.
I don't like anonymous comments.
Anyway - PF CHANGS LETTUCE WRAPS are the best thing since Magnum P.I. (that outta garner a few Google search hits)
They have the recipe on their website, and I make them often. Hint: if you're doing the tofu version, dice the tofu before you bake it so that it is super firm and cooks faster.
:o)
Oh my heavenly day...that looks so good! Now I'll know who's blog to visit when I plan a trip through Oregon that includes Bend (which at this point has been never, but that will just have to change, won't it?)
BTW...found you via Dan's blah blah blog. Dan...who couldn't take the time to head just one more state north...
Thanks for visiting my blog.
Gosh, I wish I knew about your blog before I went to Oregon. Keep up the great work!
We had lunch at Greg's Grill on Aug 7th. It was Wonderful. We had planned to just have a drink at the bar but we were greated by a young handsome bartender named Joe and we decided to just eat our lunch at the bar. The crab louie salad was great and the Chicken noodle soup was to die for!! The bar is so cool and has an ice bar strip to keep your drinks nice and cool. The Martini menu was fun and the bar is stocked to the max. We had alot of fun and the whole place is awesome- even the bathrooms!!
The food at the Grill has been great every time that I have gone. The only draw back is on one occasuion the salad had very little dressing and I had to dip my water glass in the river to get a refill. One should mention that they only have a $5 corking fee, so bring your on wine.
Cheers!
I've eaten at Greg's Grill three times and been to the bar for cocktails numerous times. The bar is beautiful and the drinks I have are a good value. I always drink high end bourbon or whiskey on the rocks. The food there however is horrendous. I have had the worst meal in Bend at this restaurant. It was overpriced and was of very poor quality. I had a cobb salad that looked like the remnants of an all you can eat salad bar after a high-school football team went through it. The cheeseburger I had at lunch was on a cheap piece of bun and they didn't have any mustard except for French's, which I found odd considering the place. Rumor has it that this restaurant is up on the market, so hopefully someone can turn this thing around because the space is beautiful and dynamic, but the service and food are not up to par. The service I have received there is next to nothing, the basics to get an order , food, and a bill out to you in no timely manner, no personality, absolutley awful.
Love the clam chowder at Greg's. Any chance to get the recipe? I live in the valley and can't go to Greg's every time I want chowder. I never thought about it being fattening!!
I've eaten at Greg's Grill twice. The first time I ordered a steak and it was good. The second time was recent, and I have to share my experience. I ordered a special off their entree menu for dinner. It was an Asian salad with chicken. I pictured a salad with white chicken breast meat. I receieved the strangest dish! The salad, itself, was fine but the chicken was all dark meat and each piece, almost, had bits of fat attached to them! It was GROSS. If you're going to order a similar salad, there, I'd get clarification from their staff what the meat will be, before you order it. Be warned!
