Szechuan Restaurant - Bend Oregon

Szechuan Restaurant

Szechuan Restaurant has been in my own personal dog house since September of 2006 when we fell ill due to some bad Hot n Sour soup. That is until recently when I gave them another go. I was sitting at home watching some football and getting hungry. I didn't want pizza but who else delivers?

I thought about Bend Take Out who delivers from a bunch of restaurants but I'd rather have hot food in a timely manner. So I thought that I should take a risk on Szechuan again. I placed my order and within 25 minutes I had a hot meal at my door.

I ordered enough to have left overs or some food for the wife when she got home. When I used to go to Szechuan for lunch I would always get either the Mandarin Chicken or Broccoli Beef. Since Mandarin Chicken is like the Big Mac of Asian cuisine I went with the Broccoli Beef.

When ordering from Szechuan I will usually get an item off the Lil' Friends portion of the menu like the BBQ Pork or sweet and sour prawns. I don't want an entire meal, just the Lil' Friends portion size. Saves a couple of bucks. I also get the Veggie Egg Rolls and Hot and Sour Soup.

Everything was great! I love taking the egg rolls and dipping them in the hot mustard and then into the provided sweet and sour. It makes for a great hot, sweet, sour combo. The hot and sour soup was amazing just like I remembered it and I'm pleased to report that there were not any negative side effects after.

On a side note, thanks to the Anonymous Commentor who sent in the following on my last Szechuan review:

"Jerkstore? Are you kidding me. Szechuan is great and a good deal. Just because you don't like it doesn't mean it isn't good. Maybe your not meant for Hot & Sour soup? I've had it a ton of times with none of the disgustingly described symptoms, as have my family."

It is because of your timely comment that I remembered I had this photo and wanted to write a second review of Szechuan Restaurant. Most of the time my commentors disagree with me and that's fine. You're wrong and I'm right. But in this case, you have a valid point. Before my bad experience, I had visited Szechuan many, many times. But one bad experience can really put a damper on a restaurant in my opinion.

Anyway, Szechuan, you have won me back and I'll be coming in for the lunch specials soon and often as well as taking advantage of delivery.

Reed Market Pub

Reed Market Pub

A friend of mine keeps telling me to try the wings at the Reed Market Pub every time I blog about the Best Hot Wings in Bend. Well, I tried them and I lost respect for said friend.

Before I go off on the some of the worst wings in Bend I will say that there are some good things going on at the Reed Market Pub.

1) Excellent beer selection
2) Free peanuts in the shell that you throw on the ground
3) Video games and pool tables

If I was going to go out and drink beer while playing pool, I would head to the Reed Market Pub I guess. Seems fun and all but I wouldn't eat anything. After watching the bartender/waitress make a pizza, then make some change for a guy gambling on the lotto machines, and then make a sandwich without washing her hands or using gloves, I decided on something cooked or fried from the back where I can't see the dirt. I'd just rather not know.

The wings were flavorless and seemed to be identical to those purchased from Costco. They were hot as hell (temperature wise) which I was hoping killed off anything that would make me ill. After the wings and beer I felt gross for the rest of the day. I did catch up on some reading later that evening while visiting the bathroom many times.

Jen, I don't think you know what you're talking about when it comes to wings. Go to BBC or Deschutes for some real wings, even though they don't serve the wingettes.

The Breakfast Club - Bend Oregon

The Breakfast Club

Our visit to the Breakfast Club was a joyous one and we can't wait to return. There are a wide variety of breakfast restaurants in Bend and everyone seems to have their favorites. I like Jake's Diner and Westside Bakery as well as Victorian Cafe (when I have the time to wait). The wife and I have been wanting to try the Breakfast Club for a while and finally made up our minds to go this past weekend.

When we rolled in there was a short waiting list in order to get a booth or to get a spot at the bar. I added my name to the list and we waited for about 5 minutes until a booth opened up. Looking over the menu we quickly realized that the Breakfast Club has probably the least expensive menu in Bend. Everything was dirt cheap. I don't think I saw one thing on the menu over $10.

My Bacon and Cheese omelet was $6.50 and it came with a choice of three hotcakes or hash browns and bread. I decided to skip all that and substitute the hash browns for 1/2 biscuits and gravy for $0.75 more. My omelet came out on a plate by itself and so did the biscuits and gravy so the photos are not the best but the flavors were money. I even had to bust out the camera to take another photo of my bacon stuffed omelet after I cut into it just to show how much bacon was included.

The wife selected a ham and cheese omlete with the hash browns. Those were some of the best hash browns we've ever had. They were crispy on the outside yet tender inside and diced up perfectly.

I had to take a photo of my $0.75 coffee and my $2.45 large orange juice. I have not seen a pint glass sized orange juice ever. Normally you get a tiny little glass of juice for $5. Now, the OJ was not fresh squeezed but the Sunkist machine makes a mean glass of juice.

We loved our experience at the Breakfast Club. There were not any frills or too many phoo phoo dishes. It was just your normal greasy spoon full of local regulars that the staff greeted by name included the line chefs from the back. This tiny restaurant packs in the customers and appears to keep them coming back. I know we'll be back soon.
