Baldy's BBQ - 5TH Anniversary

Baldy's BBQ

This week Baldy's BBQ is celebrating their 5th Anniversary with $5 specials all week long. From what I've heard, they're doing $5 full racks, smothered fries, dozen wings, 2 pulled pork or chicken sandwiches, and more + drink specials.

**Update**
After lunch at Baldy's today (Monday) I have the $5 specials:
- Full Rack of ribs (these are the Danish ribs, little smaller than their normal but well worth $5)
- 2 pulled pork sandwiches
- 2 pulled chicken sandwiches
- Dozen smoked wings (had them for Super Bowl and they are gooood)
- Smothered fries
$5 drink specials as well
**/Update**

Then Saturday they have a FREE pig roast in the parking lot, with live music (the boxcar string band), raffle prizes, Ski/snowboard equipment, Sunriver weekend for two, and Baldy's gift cards.

I hate, HATE posting shit like this because I don't want all you non-regulars of Baldy's to take advantage of a great week like this and take up seats that real patrons and I should have. My friends and I are planning to visit daily all week long. In fact, I wrote this Sunday night and am posting it at 12:30 even though I'm planning on being at Baldy's at the time of this post. Hopefully I'll get a seat.

I'll update after when I get some more info on the specials this week.

Baldy's Customer Appreciation Week and BaldyFest

BaldyFest

This week Baldy's is doing their Customer Appreciation Week which will lead up to Saturday's BaldyFest. Last year I showed up and took some photos of the 70lb pig roasting away in the smoker and got a sample of the pork...soooo good. Its nice to hear that in these trying times, you can still get some great food super cheap.

This week you can get some $4 specials (as it is their 4th Anniversary):

4 bone ribs for $3 (that's $9 full racks)
Baldy Burger sliders $4
Pulled Pork Sandwich $4
Brisket Sandwich $4
Smothered Fries $4
Smoked Wings 1/2dz $4
Smokehouse Chili bowl $4

ALL Specials are for dine in only.

$4 Drink specials all week as well w/$2 local micro beers.

On Saturday they'll be doing the bash at Baldy's aka "BaldyFest". They'll have the band Blackstrap playing, the PIG will be spinning, and they'll have prizes and giveaways. That's 2-7pm on Sat. Feb 7th. Then on Sunday, Baldy's actual anniversary, Brian (aka Baldy) will rest.

Baldy's BBQ - Bend Oregon

Baldy's BBQ

Just when I think Baldy's can't get any better, I get hit with the Beef, Chicken, and Pork combo platter at lunch for $10. I'm really loving these three meat combo's lately. At Baldy's the combo is pulled pork, BBQ chicken, and beef brisket plus a gigantic salad (your choice of house or Caesar).

After stuffing my face with fork full after fork full of deliciously smoked animal flesh, I realized I need something else. I ordered some garlic toast which really helped out. You have to have garlic toast with BBQ, it's only natural. For $10, this combo is definitely my favorite of the three meat platters that I've tried so far. Absolutely worth it.

Go Baldy GO!

Baldy's BBQ Customer Appreciation Week

Baldy's BBQ

Last week was Baldy's BBQ's Customer Appreciation Week as Baldy was celebrating their 3 year anniversary. It was their actual 3 year anniversary unlike other blogs that post yearly anniversaries after a couple months. I remember going to Baldy's the first night they were opened. I was super excited to have an actual BBQ joint in town.

I called up a BBQ friend and with the wife, we shared the sampler to try out all the different options. Everything was great and we've been back many times in the past three years. I normally get the ribs, by far the best in Bend.

Anyway, I noticed a big yellow sign the last time I drove by:

So we decided to go in for a quick lunch on Saturday. The wife and I split the $3 chili and $3 smothered fries and each had some ribs. Awesome all around. But watching Brian (Baldy) and his crew put a 70 lb pig into a smoker on top of a big snow bank was really interesting. No camera with me and cell phone photos were not going to do it justice. So I asked when the piggy was going to come out and said I'd come back for some photos.

I was lucky enough to get one of those pieces he trimmed off but the pig wasn't completely ready to come out. The piece I had was juicy, tender, and the skin was crispy and delicious! I wish I could have stuck around until it came out but I had to jet.

Where would you eat?

Where would you eat if you only had three days in Bend Oregon?

An out of state visitor to the Bend Oregon Restaurants blog emailed and asked for some advice on dinner options for three days in July. So I started thinking of where I'd go if I had only three days in Bend and was looking for dinner for two adults and an 8 yr old child with a preferred budget of around $12-$20 per entree.
Considering the child...Baltazar's is out of the question. If you have any thoughts (not about Baltazar's), feel free to post or email and I'll send them along to our soon to be visitor. Following is what I'd recommend but if you ask me tomorrow, I might have a different plan.

Friday night I'd take it fairly easy and hit up Big Island Kona Mix Plate for their prime rib special:

This photo shows the 10 ounce prime rib with some Shoyu Spare Ribs which were also the special for that Friday. Prime Rib is always the Friday special but I'll take anything Shoyu style. Wednesday's are the Shoyu Chicken which is insanely good. Slow cooked over night, the chicken and these ribs had the meat just falling off the bone. So tender, just like me. If you go for just the prime rib I believe the price is $14 for the 8 ounce and a couple bucks more for the 10 ounce. If you do get the prime rib, ask them to slice it for you since you eat with plastic ware. For the prices that they are charging, I'd really like to get away from the plastic ware and the styrofoam to-go containers.

They do have their full menu on their myspace page...don't even get me started on how silly it is to JUST have the myspace page and abandon their actual site. Not everyone has a myspace account. Anyway, the menu is accomodating for adults and kids. Opt for the Potato Mac as one of your sides.

For dessert I would definitely swing by the Blacksmith for the dessert sampler for two (it'll be plenty for all three of you) and a Spanish coffee:

On Saturday I would totally do the tourist move and go to Deschutes. Their daily specials menu is awesome but if nothing on the specials is right for you, I recommend the French Dip for only $8:

For dessert walk a block down to Goodies for some treats.

On Sunday I would head over to the west side for Baldy's to get some of the best ribs I've ever had:

You won't have room for dessert. There you have it. Locals, let me know if you agree / disagree / don't care for tourists / want to dance / like me / whatever.

Baldy's BBQ - Chicken Wings

Baldy's BBQ

You can read my review of Baldy's BBQ Ribs but I wanted to dedicate a post to just the Baldy's chicken wings. I like the wings at Deschutes and BBC but man, these wings are just too good. It's only 10am and my mouth is seriously salivating over the thought of these wings.

They aren't too hot but just spicy enough to make you enjoy the coolness received from the ranch or blue cheese or both like me. The wings are soaking in the wing sauce but yet they have a nice crispy exterior. The meat is always juicy and cooked to perfection.

I have absolutely nothing bad to say about Baldy's wings. They're GREAT!

So who has the best wings in Bend? I'm thinking about the ones that I have tried and I like different wings at different places for different reasons. Like my Best Burrito in Bend week, I think I may have to do a tour of wings.

Baldy's Barbeque, Bend Oregon - Baby Back Ribs

Baldy's Barbeque Bend Oregon

I've already written up a review on Baldy's Barbeque Ribs but that was a half rack for lunch. I have to show you this photo of the Full Mac Daddy Rack or Ribs that I recently devoured for dinner:

You KNOW you're going to be going to Baldy's really soon now. Admit it!!! Just let him know that I sent you, we're tight like that.

If you've read any of my reviews you'll know that I don't suck up to anyone. I have no reason to. Until people start giving me free food or special treatment, I call it like I see it. Actually, even if they were to give me free food, I'll still call it like I see it (at least that's what I'll tell people...shhhh keep that between you and I). So my point is that I don't suck up to anyone (yet) but as you'll read below, I'm gushing over some Baldy's ribs.

These ribs are amazingly good. I have said before that I make great ribs, but I can't get them to be as tender as Baldy can. I mean the meat just falls right off the bone. As you rip your first rib apart from the others you'll be left with just the bone in your hand as all the meat is still on the connected ribs. This just makes that next rib even better. Then you just rip the meat right off and dip it in one of his BBQ sauces. His sauces are delicious as well, I like the spicy even though it's not that spicy. Good going Baldy.
