Brother Jon's - Breakfast - Bend Oregon
Brother Jon's - Breakfast
Brother Jon's is one of my favorite places to hang out. I've had almost everything on the menu aside from the stupid portobello sandwich. "But it tasted like steak, you'll love it" your vegan ass tries to convince me. Yeah, sure portobello tastes like steak if steak was mushy and tasted like shit. It's not steak and doesn't taste "beefy". You know what does taste "beefy"? BEEF. Stop with all that nonsense.
I've written about the regular Brother Jon's menu and the Specials board before. Now I'd like to share that they are open for breakfast - currently only on Saturdays and Sundays and showing a bunch of college and NFL games accordingly. This works great for me as normally I do whatever the Wife wants on Saturday and I do whatever I want on Sundays. And during the NFL season, my Sunday is spent watching football.
Even though Brother Jon's owners are Patriots and Saints fans, they are cool with showing a good team on one of their many TVs if you request it. While you watch your team you can grub on one of their breakfast items from breakfast sandwiches, good ole breakfast plates, biscuits and gravy, and a few different eggs benedict. My favorite is the Country Benedict which is basically a normally eggs bene but with country gravy in place of hollandaise.

You get the option of country potatoes or cottage cheese and fruit. I like to keep things healthy so I usually go for the fruit...then I just don't eat it and they have to throw it away...this is what I call "American Style".

Brother Jon's - Bend Oregon
Brother Jon's
I've gushed over Brother Jon's in the past but that was just about their regular menu. Lately I've been all over their specials. I love showing up and seeing whats on the big chalk board for that day. I haven't been disappointed yet. Brother Jon's is my favorite restaurant/hangout in Bend right now. Everything is great and its all priced right. Specials are normally right at $8.50 or $9 and is a solid meal every time.
I normally will try to go for lunch once a week and if I don't, I start to get the shakes. Once on a Monday I was fortunate enough that they were offering the dinner special at lunch - Pork Verde. Amazing! I can't stop talking about it to my friends. Chunks of super tender pork swimming in a bowl of spicy verde and served with rice and a bowl of soupy black beans and tortillas.
On the days that I walk in to see the chicken pot pie on the specials board I get all excited. I mean, just look at it:

When I was a kid, chicken pot pie was right out of the freezer and after an eternity in the oven the first bite would burn the roof of my mouth while the rest of it was still frozen. The Brother Jon's version is quite a bit better. I've only successfully finished it once out of 3 attempts but will get it every time its offered.
Another special that I've had the pleasure of destroying was the sweet hot pulled pork covered in cheese. Messy sucker but very good and just look at the portions.

Basically you can't go wrong with anything on the menu or anything offered for as a special.
And of course don't forget the $2 PBR tall boys. I've been on a PBR kick lately. I use my P-38 Can Opener to pop a vent in the back of the can for easy flow and sprinkle a little salt on top like a Whiskey Tango (military speak for WT - WT being white trash) margarita. Salt on the top of a cheap beer can makes it fancy, high class sippin.
So arm yourself with a P-38 (you civilians can get one at the Military Surplus on 3rd) and next time you're at a WT party where all they have is canned beer, do as I do and pop'n salt that sucker and swill. Just a little tip from your Uncle BOR.

OK, a little bonus coverage - The current site is awesome, simply says "Eat me, please." When I was a little kid my parents took us to Philly and we did all the tourist stuff like run up the Museum steps Rocky style and then we went inside to tour the museum. There was this machine that you could put you name onto a commemorative coin as a souvenir. I of course put my name and it stamped "Future BOR" right onto the coin. I was pleased as punch.
My older brother was cracking up as he received his coin. He showed it to me and it read "Eat Me Philly!"
I didn't get it. He got in trouble.

Brother Jon's Public House
Brother Jon's Public House is open in the old Makhana's coffee shop location on Galveston. Jon and Steve (formerly with the Downtowner) are open for business with a full bar, 5 beers on tap including one of my favorites, Terminal Gravity's IPA, and familiar staff since they've hired all ex Deschutes Pub employees - it feels like I was eating at Deschutes Brewery like 4 years ago.
Their menu consists of sandwiches, soups/salads, apps, and doesn't have an item over $10 which is great for me. Another plus is that pints are only $3.50. That beats the $4.50 I'm paying at most places, and with my consumption, I can't afford that extra buck per pint.
On my first visit it was recommended that I go with the club. House roasted turkey, ham, bacon, cheese on toasted bread with lettuce, tomato, red onion, and mayo. $8.50

This photo is actually from my friend's plate and is the regular club. I made some crack about how a club should have avocado and sure enough mine came out with it. I love avocado on a club. It just brings it all together. But I thought I'd show the photo from the version without the avocado.
For a club, this bitch is solid! The bacon is thick, the portions are huge, and the price is spot on. It IS very similar to the club from the Downtowner and looking at comparison photos you can see why. BUT, since I can easily find a table at Brother Jon's without having to wedge into the tightest of overcrowded spots (like at The Downtowner), can play a round of darts for free, and order a tanquerey and tonic, I will go to Brother Jon's over The Downtowner in a heartbeat. Also, since Krista's is not delivering the club in nearly the same quality they were last Summer, I have to declare a new King of the Club for Bend Oregon. Congrats Brother!
The wife ordered The Captain Jack Sparrow. Pulled pork, ham, pineapple, and sweet onion simmered in pineapple-rum sauce and served on a kaiser with melted pepperjack and mayo. $8.50 (all the sandwiches on the menu are $8.50)

I got a taste and it is gooood. Pork and pineapple just go so well together.
On my next visit the special was a turkey, bacon, ranch, and swiss sandwich for $8.50. I decided to go for it.

Hot cheese melted over crispy bacon and turkey in some sort of heavenly fusion just makes me giddy like a school girl. I liked it. Could have used some avocado but hey, that's just me.
Unlike the club, I was able to finish this sandwich but still wanted to take a nap an hour later. For the ladies, the club is not too crunchy that it hurts the inside of your mouth, I know thats an issue for many of my readers.
